BOOM AND DUST is a book and live music event showcasing a 58 ft accordion fold photo book by photographers Jason Reed and Barry Stone. BOOM AND DUST depicts the petroplex, a 40-mile stretch of highway between Midland and Odessa, Texas. The book is accompanied by a soundscape recorded in the Permian which will be conjured live by Porch Swing Orchestra for the event.

With a play of symmetry and interruption, figures and columns are created from a single geometric pattern. Her work emphasizes a grid of diaphanous, floating shapes. She has been utilizing the same pattern for twenty years to create her paintings. The patterns shift on paper as her own hand recreates the shapes from a light box. A slower process — she sometimes calls this pattern of re-patterning studies for studies.

Born in 1962, Leslie Wilkes grew up in Monroe and Athens, Georgia. She received a BA in painting from the University of Texas at Austin and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and was the recipient of the Milton and Sally Avery Fellowship Award at MacDowell. Working primarily with oil on canvas and gouache and graphite on paper, she has had solo exhibitions in Dallas, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Austin, New Orleans, Marfa and Milan. Her work was published in Texas Abstract Modern/Contemporary and on the book jacket of James Elkins, The Object Stares Back. Her work has been reviewed in The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, The Denver Times, The Dallas Morning News, Big Bend Sentinel and New Art Examiner. Collections include The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Rubin Center for the Arts at the University of Texas El Paso. Wilkes has lived and worked in Marfa, Texas, since 2005.

Today we went on a crazy road trip quest to see another Fujimori Tea House at the Kiyoharu Art Colony. Wow! What a beautiful surprise.
The Art Colony sits on a big piece of property with perfect views of Mt Fuji and architecture by Gustave Eiffel, Yoshio Tanguchi, Tadao Ando and, of course, Terunobu Fujimori. All small and perfect scale. The literal cherry on top was century old cherry trees throughout the property.
Every building has an incredible collection of work — Julges Rouault, Ryuzaburo Umehara and even Barbara Kruger — specific and the best of. You need a car to get there and driving in Japan is a real learning experience, but worth every narrow road.

We spent the entire day at The 1970 World Expo site in Osaka.
The best of show is most definitely the Tower of the Sun by Taro Okamoto. You can climb inside the 70 meter sculpture for one trippy, beautiful experience. After the completion of the tower, Expo ‘70 organizer and science fiction writer Sakyo Komatsu said to Okamoto that it reminded him of a scene in the 1955 novel Season of the Sun where a character sticks his penis through a sliding paper door, and suggested the name “Tower of the Sun.”
The Expo was designed by Japanese architect Kenzō Tange. If visiting, do NOT miss the Steel Pavilion. The permanent exhibition display is absolutely terrific. From showcasing the participating countries to the Expo logo/design elements, it’s spot on.
The theme was “Progress and Harmony for Mankind,” it attracted a record-breaking 64.21 million visitors. The event featured 116 fantastical pavilions and highlighted Japan’s post-war technological rise. Trains!
